How Long Do Dentures Last?

new dentures being adjusted

Dentures last many years with the appropriate care, yet they will not last forever. If properly maintained and securely fitter, dentures will last at least five to seven years. After this time, your dentures may need to be relined or rebased if they become loose. You should have your mouth and dentures evaluated annually. If the dentures become too ill-fitting or there is significant wear, fractures or deterioration of the dentures, new ones may be required. Below are some denture care instructions to help your dentures last as long as possible.

But First, How Long Can False Teeth Last?

How long your dentures last depend on the individual circumstances. With normal use and proper denture care, healthy, younger people can have dentures that last more than 10 years. Meanwhile, older people or those with underlying health issues such as bone loss, dentures may not last as long. However, in some cases where the user is in their later stages of life, the dentures may serve as a permanent solution for tooth loss.

Taking Care Of Your Dentures Will Make It Last Longer

Denture Care After Eating a Meal

Whether you have full or partial dentures, they require proper care to keep them clean, free from stains and long lasting. After eating, you should run cold water over your dentures to remove food debris and other loose particles. Make sure you handle your dentures carefully when cleaning, trying to avoid bending or damaging the plastic or clasps.

Brushing Your Dentures

Brush your dentures twice, including before bed. Use a soft toothbrush to clean all surfaces of the denture to remove food and plaque build-up. Use mild soap, denture paste or water. Avoid toothpaste as this can scratch dentures. If you use denture adhesive, clean the grooves that fit against your gums to remove any remaining adhesive. Don’t use denture cleansers inside your mouth.

Gently brush any parts of your mouth normally covered by dentures and any natural teeth using fluoride toothpaste. Clean your tongue, cheeks and roof of your mouth. Take care to remove any remaining denture adhesive on your gums. Ensuring all-round good oral hygiene is essential for denture care.

Soaking Your Dentures

Soaking is another important aspect of denture care as many dentures need to stay moist to retain their shape. Ensure this by soaking your dentures in water or a mild denture-soaking solution overnight. Leaving your dentures out overnight also gives your mouth a chance to rest and recover.

Check with your dentist about proper denture storage overnight and always follow manufacturer instructions on cleaning and soaking. Rinse dentures thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth the next morning, especially if you use denture-soaking solution. Some of these solutions contain harmful chemicals that can cause vomiting or pain if swallowed.
